A card expires, a bank declines something, an Apple ID payment method goes stale. Deeta shows a banner:
We couldn't renew your subscription. Update your payment method to keep Plus features.
Nothing has been taken away
You keep your plan while it's sorted out. Around two weeks, during which Apple retries the payment periodically.
Everything works as normal: unlimited contacts, your full AI allowance, live updates still sending. The banner is a heads-up, not a lock-out.
It doesn't block you. Dismiss it and carry on — it comes back next launch while the problem is unresolved, because it matters.
Fixing it
-
Tap Update payment on the banner.
-
Apple's payment screen opens.
-
Add or update the card.
-
That's it — the next retry succeeds and the banner disappears on its own.
If it isn't fixed
At the end of the retry window the subscription expires and you go to Free.
Nothing is deleted. Your contacts, deets and groups are all still there — anything above the Free limits becomes read-only rather than disappearing. See Upgrading and downgrading for exactly what that means.
Live updates you're already sending keep going. If you have more live cards than Free allows (five), new shares go as snapshots until you resubscribe.
Resubscribe whenever you like and it all unlocks again.
Troubleshooting
I updated my card and the banner's still there. Apple retries on its own schedule, so it can take a little time. The banner clears automatically when the renewal goes through.
"Update payment" opens the wrong place. It goes to whichever payment method is actually on the subscription — the App Store, or your billing provider if you subscribed outside the app.
Which card is failing? Check Settings → [your name] → Payment & Shipping on your iPhone. Deeta isn't told the details.
I subscribed through the website. The button takes you to the billing portal instead of Apple's. Same idea.
I want to cancel rather than fix it. Do nothing and it lapses at the end of the retry window. Or cancel via Settings → Plan → Manage in App Store to be sure.
I already cancelled — why the banner? A renewal was still due when it failed. It'll clear once the period ends.
Questions
How long do I have? About two weeks. Apple sets it, not us.
Am I charged for the grace period? No.
Will I be told before it ends? Apple emails you about the failed payment. The banner stays up in the meantime.
Do I lose data? No. Never. See Upgrading and downgrading.
Does it affect shares I've sent? No. Sharing itself is free on every plan, and live cards you've already sent keep updating on every plan, during the grace period and after it. If the subscription lapses, only new live cards beyond Free's five go as snapshots.
