If someone shared their card with you before live updates existed, you don't have to ask them to send it again. Deeta can switch those existing cards over.

Being offered it
When a card you already hold becomes eligible, Deeta asks:
Rob's contact info can now update automatically — turn on live updates?
The info Rob already shared with you will stay current. Nothing new is added.

Nothing new is added either way. Turning it on doesn't hand over anything they haven't already shared with you; it just keeps what you've got from going stale.
When it's several people at once
If a few become eligible together, you get one prompt instead of several:
4 people can now update automatically
You can Turn on for all 4, or tap Choose people to pick.
Doing it later
You don't have to decide in the moment. Settings → Live updates has a section called Eligible for live updates:
These people shared with you before live updates existed. Turning it on keeps what they already shared current.
Turn any of them on from there, whenever you like.
Troubleshooting
I tapped Not now and want it after all. Settings → Live updates, under Eligible for live updates.
Someone isn't listed as eligible. Only a card that was sent live can be switched over. If theirs went as a snapshot — from a set that never updates, or because they'd used all their live cards — ask them to share again.
I tapped Turn on and they disappeared from the list. That card can't go live any more, usually because they've stopped sharing it with you. What they already shared stays as it is. Ask them to share again if you want their updates.
Nothing happened after I turned it on. Their details stay as they are until they change something. Turning it on doesn't fetch anything new by itself — it means the next change reaches you.
Questions
Does turning it on give them anything? No. It doesn't send them your details and it doesn't tell them what you've done.
Does it add details I didn't already have? No. It keeps the ones they already shared current. Anything genuinely new arrives as an addition you can accept or decline — see Reviewing an update someone sent you.
Can I turn it back off? Yes, per person, any time — Settings → Live updates.
Does it cost anything? No. Receiving is free on every plan.
